Loop diagrams: generate from data vs redraw in CAD
By Saad, practising automation engineer · Updated 2026-09-25
AutoCAD remains the issue tool for many plants. SchematicForge does not replace CAD review — it stops you redrawing every loop when the IO list moves. Output is native DXF you can still open and edit.
Side by side
| Topic | Redraw in CAD | Generate from the IO list |
|---|---|---|
| When the IO list changes | Open each DWG and trace the affected loops again. | Re-import the register. Only changed loops regenerate; a delta lists what to re-issue. |
| Source of truth | The drawing is the document. Spreadsheets drift. | Tag, signal, cable, and terminal live in one dataset. Drawings render from it. |
| Output | Native DWG/DXF you already issue. | Native DXF with editable blocks, plus SVG/PDF and schedules from the same run. |
| Starting point | A blank sheet or last revision. | The vendor IO list. Free parse preview, no account. |
What does not change
Engineer review, title-block approval, and your CAD standard still apply. Generated documents are drafting aids, not a SIL/IEC 61511 deliverable. Layer names and title block are configurable per project so the DXF can follow the standard you already use.
